From Thomas More’s original Utopia of 1516, we shall follow the development of utopian ideals, using examples from around the world.  This vision of an ideal world has been used to produce political critiques, as well as imagining – and in some cases, making practical attempts at realising – ideal societies.  Since the late 19th century, however, the emphasis has tended to focus on dystopias – broken worlds – warnings of what happens when it all goes wrong.
