The Republic of Venice — La Serenissima — achieved its wealth and prominence during the later middle ages, when it dominated much of the trade between the Levant and Europe. In the 15th and 16th centuries Venice achieved excellence by producing some of the most influential artists and architects, among them Bellini, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, and Palladio. We will explore the ways in which the art and architecture of the most prosperous centuries in the life of the Republic of Venice expressed the city’s unique identity.
