This course explores artistic practices of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Finland from c.1850 -1950. As many Nordic countries underwent rapid industrialisation, their painters addressed the accompanying social changes.  We will examine how painters explored their environment through landscape painting, depicted the identities of its peoples through portraiture, and alluded to the threat of alienation with the domestic interior.
