The title represents a popular phrase, used mainly by promoters of anarchist ideas. Appropriately, there is a lively debate about its origin! Both anarchism, and atheism / deism are frequently portrayed as threatening forms of idealism. But this simplistic view does little to to truly convey the extraordinary depth of thinking behind “libertarianism”. Both the political left, and the right lay claim to libertarian principles, and that difficulty will be discussed – in depth! In many ways, several of these ideas are a continuation of 18th century Enlightenment thinking – that what is important is developing self-belief in one’s ability to make informed decisions and judgments, rather than just blindly accepting the beliefs of others. Individual liberty, the self, the church, the state, political systems ……. all of the relationships between these aspects of civil society will be examined, and discussed
