Living in one of the driest parts of the UK in an increasingly warm climate, this day school on making a dry garden is an ideal (though not necessary) preparation for our visit to Beth Chatto’s garden on Thursday 7 June. Topics include: working with what you’ve got (What kind of soil? What grows best in it? ¬†How to get good results); styles of dry garden (Mediterranean, California, desert, Japanese, alpine, no-plants garden); materials for a dry garden (sand, gravel, pebbles, rocks, timber and, paradoxically, water!); planting for a dry garden (foliage-colour and shape, plants that will grow well in drought, conserving what moisture there is).
