This course will look at how cinema has used the written word (novels, biographies, plays and even poetry) as the inspiration for so many movies from the early, silent black and white shorts to the present day. It will chart the success of literary adaptations over the years, concentrating mainly on English language films. We will consider a range of works across a variety of movie genres and conduct a detailed analysis of several film adaptations to reveal the issues and challenges involved in turning literary works into film.
